A former PhD student has been sent to life in prison for the kidnap and murder of a Chinese graduate student at the University of Illinois.

Brendt Christensen received the life term after jury unable to reach a unanimous verdict on

Although Illinois has abolished capital punishment, Christensen was charged in federal court, which had made him eligible for the death penalty.
