The original story follows.
Some Xbox Live services appear to be down for Xbox One and Xbox 360 users, including party chat, waiting list access, login and online games. The outbreak started on January 12 and has been reported by thousands of Xbox Live users.
While some have reported problems with online gambling, in our own testing we only noted difficulties in joining friends in parties, and it included receiving or sending party chat invitations. We have been able to play games online, and access apps and digitally downloaded games. When it comes to getting to the list of friends, we can see our friend list, but it seems to be frozen, and shows data from yesterday instead of correct and up-to-date information.
Microsoft is aware of the problems and works with a solution. However, it is unclear how long the current Xbox Live service interruption ends and what exactly causes the problem. The weekend is when many people actually have time to sit and play video games, so hope Microsoft can fix Xbox Live rather than later.
If you encounter problems with party chat, go with your friends online and log in or try to view profiles, our teams are aware of and on the matter. We will surely provide updates here when we have more to share.

While this particular Xbox Live service interruption may be frustrating for Xbox One and Xbox 360 players, it does not seem to be as widespread or problematic as some previous outbreaks . As mentioned earlier, we have been able to enter online games and, contrary to others, have not encountered any problems with party chat or things of that type. Also, it seems unlikely to be the result of a deliberate DDoS attack, which we saw during Christmas 2014.
Since the Christmas 2014 Lizard Squad attack, Xbox Live services have been relatively stable, with service interruptions that only occur a handful of times out of the year. In fact, last time a major Xbox Live interruption took place was in November of November, and it lasted only a few hours.
Again, it is difficult to say exactly how long this latest Xbox Live service break will be, but here it hopes to be resolved earlier rather than later.
