Wisconsin reports many fewer new COVID-19 tests, cases – WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) – With minor testing, Wisconsin reported remarkably fewer COVID-19 cases and saw many other measurements of COVID-19 pandemic effects on the condition drop Monday.

The department of health care reported 7,173 new test results, of which 404 – or 5.6 percent – came back positive, according to the figures released today.

The remaining tests, 94.4 percent, gave negative results. But a negative test only means that the person tested did not have the disease at that time. They may still be affected by COVID-19.

Measuring the proportion of new cases returned in tests every day helps to differentiate whether increases in cases are due to greater spread or more testing, according to DHS.

The average seven days dropped to 844 new cases per day, from 91

4 a week ago.

DHS also listed a new death, for a total of 949 people (1.7 percent of the positive cases) killed by the disease.

The state reported 15 new hospital admissions. Wisconsin Hospital currently treats 294 patients with COVID-19. Of these, 106 are in intensive care units.

The state reported 6,779 new negative test results.

Of all the positive cases reported since the pandemic began, 44,495 or 80.4 percent are considered recoverable.

DHS now has an instrument panel at county level to assess the activity level COVID-19 in counties and health and medical preparedness coalition regions that measure what DHS calls the burden in each county. Show the instrument panel HERE.

The new strain of coronavirus causes the disease COVID-19. Symptoms include cough, fever and shortness of breath. For a complete list of symptoms, visit the Centers for Disease Control website.

In severe cases, pneumonia can develop. Those most at risk include the elderly, people with heart or lung disease and anyone at greater risk of infection.

For most people, the virus is mild and is presented in the same way as a common cold or flu.

Anyone who thinks they may have the disease should call a hospital or clinic before going in for a diagnosis. Doing so will allow staff time to take appropriate precautions to prevent the virus from spreading.

Those who need emergency medical services should continue to use 911.
