Why I bought a Galaxy S10 5G

A wireless analyst and former Qualcomm product marketers explain their passion for the new Samsung 5G handset.

Last week, people finally got the opportunity to take care of the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S10 5G-the first real premium 5G smartphone. Reviews are divided between skeptics who say that 5G is not yet ready and technical enthusiasts predict what 5G has achieved in a short time. The truth is somewhere in between.

First, I think you should hold the phone, pause, take a deep breath and appreciate this historic moment. There has been so much skepticism that we rush 5G, millimeter wave (mmwave) bands will not work, the components will not fit in a small form factor, the phones lack mobility, they will not have good battery life and so much more. This beautiful, shiny phone blew everything away.

But as with using any new generation of technology, there are still problems and the biggest is coverage. 5G is limited to certain cities and even some places in them. Some complain that you lose coverage if you go a few steps in one direction or another.

There is no denial of these facts. But you have to consider that it has only been a few weeks since the launch of the networks. People see significant improvements over tests made a few weeks ago when the Moto 5G mod was launched. For example, Verizon has announced that it will take 5G to 20 more cities by the end of the year.

Questions are about the feasibility of mmwave bands. In fact, mmwave tapes are inevitable to get capacity and user experience 5G, so the sooner we start building networks with them, the better. Remember that mmwave bands are not covered but for capacity.

Below 6 GHz for 5G will soon support them through spectrum sharing in Verin's case or through new implementations for others. And it is worth noting that Verizon is proud to build a solid network, so its commitment to mmwave says something.

It takes us to $ 1

,300 question, if you buy a Galaxy S10 5G? This is because everyone's needs are different.

If you are in the market for a new phone you should definitely buy it. The typical life of smartphones today is two years or more. With near-extended 5G coverage, you'll get ample 5G usage on your phone during that time.

The extra $ 300 you pay to get 5G is well worth it for future proofing it gives. If you want to save money you should buy last year's phone, instead of spending $ 1000 on a new 4G single phone.

If you are an early adopter who likes the adrenaline jump to be the first to experience new gadgets, S10 5G is your device. This is an opportunity for you to be associated with an important part of the technology history.

Personally, I fight both of these categories, so I ordered my S10 5G.

Some compare the 5G launch with 4G and incorrectly claim that there will be a long maturation cycle. The difference between the 5G and 4G launch could not be stronger. The 4G launch was weak, almost like an experiment. However, the 5G launch is a gigantic global phenomenon with more than 200 operators in more than 80 countries participating. About 10 5G smartphones are already delivered, and 20 more units are on their way to this year.

To the most persistent and skeptics of 5G, who question my enthusiasm, I can only say that 5G is still like a newborn, I am not complaining about feeding and cleaning. Believe me, this baby will grow up in no time and blow your mind. Wait, my doorbell rings, must be the FedEx guy with my Galaxy S10 5G!
