The Mental Awareness Week is observed to create more awareness of mental health and related problems and to promote the message of good mental health for all. For the reverse, this year’s theme is kindness. According to mentalhealth.org.uk, they chose kindness as the theme because “one thing they have seen all over the world is that kindness prevails in uncertain times.” During the Awareness Week, several events take place in schools, companies, community groups. In addition, events are organized to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation. The first week for mental health awareness began in 2001 and since then, awareness of topics such as body image, stress and relationships has been raised.

As we observe the week we asked Sahana Tantry, Psychologist & Outreach Associate, Mpower The Center – Bengaluru to give us more insight into what steps to take after being diagnosed with mental health and this year’s theme. Speaking about the steps, she said, “If you identify that either yourself or others are suffering from a mental health problem, the first step would be to be kind to yourself or to the other person. It is extremely important to show unconditional positive consideration ( shows complete acceptance and support for someone, regardless of what he or she says) towards yourself or anyone else suffering from a mental illness. ”

“Offering advice, being critical of them, or being dismissive is NOT something you have to do for both yourself or others when we are in an overwhelming state. It is extremely important to talk about the problem, because helping us express it to a trusted person will help us feel as if we are not alone in this and also it sometimes helps us to get some clarity on the situation.When trust has developed by being there for the person you have to ask them to seek help with a psychiatric professional so that they do so no longer go into a downward spiral. “

How to implement the theme of friendliness?

For the reverse, friendliness is the theme this year and wants to know how to implement it then read on. She said: “Kindness is the beautiful human transaction of care and positive consideration. It gives warmth to both the person who shows kindness and to receive kindness. One can become a friendlier person by first showing it to oneself-talking to themselves like how they would talk to a child – encouraging and appreciating themselves, being more understanding of their shortcomings / mistakes, focusing on what they can learn from it rather than being critical and harsh about it. “

She added: “You can be kind to others by showing their care – whether it’s spending time with them, listening to them with openness, helping them in any way they can, appreciating the strengths of others, treating them with respect. Thus, it is like nurturing a plant. Just as if you need to water the plant every day and monitor the soil regularly – work on doing some kind of action every day, monitoring your kind vice to yourself regularly. And slowly, goodness will blossom out like a flower filling everyone in their presence with happiness. “
