FOXBOROUGH, fair – And then there were two.
The Giants worked this season with three quarterbacks on their roster, although only two of them – Daniel Jones and Eli Manning – were active on game days. Alex Tanney, no. The 3-quarterback, has not been in uniform in any of the first five games, and on Thursday he relented because the Giants are in serious trouble at the back position.
Tanney's place at the competition was taken by Austin Walter, a backback signed from the practice squad. Injuries to Saquon Barkley (high ankle pollution) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) left the Giants with just one running back, the nasty newcomer Jon Hilliman, heading into the game with the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. The only other possible ball carrier was the fullback Eli Penny. It was too thin for comfort in the offensive backfield, so Walter was promoted.
Walter, 23, ran 1
Tanney, a traveler if there ever was one, made the Giants list last season before Davis Webb, a draft pick. Tanney picked up again this season, as coach Pat Shurmur is fond of Tanney's ability to pick up offense quickly.
Tanney could be reversed once the return situation has cleared. Barkley may be back in Week 7 for the game against the Cardinals, and Gallman should also be available by that time.
