When treated with antibiotics, probiotic yogurt can prevent infection with the dangerous bacterium Clostridium difficile. After antibiotic treatment, two-thirds of patients suffer from diarrhea. Because antibiotics destroy not only pathogenic but also useful bacteria, they can balance the intestinal flora. If probiotics in yogurt also contribute to a better intestinal flora in healthy people is controversial.
Hazardous infection with Clostridium difficile
Clostridium difficile bacterium accounts for about 15-20 percent of diarrheal diseases caused by antibiotics. Its toxins cause fatal intestinal inflammation, which occurs as severe, sudden burnout, watery diarrhea with nausea, abdominal pain and fever. Usually diarrhea has a nasty smell.
Probiotics in milk products and preparations
The term probiotics is used to summarize various microorganisms, such as lactobacillus casei (bacteria) and yeast. They help strengthen the barrier function of the intestine and reduce the excessive spread of pathogens.
Probiotics are found naturally in lactic acid products, such as yogurt, kefir, buttermilk and sauerkraut. For probiotic yogurt, larger amounts of bacterial strain are also added. As a drug, probiotics are available in capsule and drip form. Most preparations contain bifido and lactobacilli. More than one million microorganisms are needed for positive effects.
Intestinal flora in each human being different
Everyone has their own individual composition of the intestinal flora, which is mainly influenced by nutrition and immunological processes. It is important for digestion, defense against pathogens and enhancement of the immune system. Intestinal flora in humans consists of approximately 2000 different types of intestinal bacteria. Altogether, they take about 100 billion bacteria in the intestines up to a weight of up to two kilos.
