Supplements are important for pregnant women. During pregnancy, women have an increased need for vitamins and minerals. This can usually be covered by a careful diet – with the exception of folic acid, vitamin B12 and iodine.
There is generally a slight lack of iodine in Germany. Supplemental folic acid is also advisable.
Stiftung Warentest has tested 17 preparations, three of which are folic acid monopreparations. Any other agent tested is appropriate.
For example, Stiftung Warentest controls dietary supplements
Stiftung Warentest tested whether the indicated doses correspond to the recommendations of the German-speaking professional associations "Gesund ins Leben", the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) or the European Food Authority (EFSA).
Depending on the declaration, Stiftung Stiftung Warentest determined ingredients in the preparations by analysis in the laboratory. It was examined to what extent the particular content differs from that on the packaging. In addition, tests were carried out for residues and contaminations. A detailed overview of the test methods is available at test.de.
Result: No tested agent shows any noticeable results. With the exception of one, all products retained the declared values.
Preparatory preparations are generally unnecessary, as most nutrients are absorbed by nutrition, according to the Stiftung Warentest.

Dietary Supplements: With folic acid and iodine, it is usually the right choice
Pregnant women and women with children have increased need for minerals and vitamins. Especially folic acid and iodine are very important and should be taken as additions. Even a varied diet is not enough to supplement the necessary amount of folic acid and iodine. Doctors and nutrition experts therefore recommend taking both pill form. Pure folic acid supplements are suitable for women who are not allowed to take iodine due to thyroid problems.
You don't have to put much on it. Many suitable preparations with iodine and folic acid cost between 6 and 20 euros per package. Avital supplements cost only 7 cents a day.
Food supplements for pregnant women: Combination preparations are usually not necessary
Pregnant women just want the best for the baby growing in them. Many therefore use combined preparations, which in addition to folic acid and iodine, other vitamins and minerals, such as iron. However, such a nutrient mixture is rarely needed because you eat most nutrients through a balanced diet.
However, Omega-3 can be useful for individual cases: especially people who do not like lean fish such as saithe or herring should take omega-3 supplements.
Omega-3 is important for the development of visual function and brain. Studies also show a reduced risk of childbirth birth.

Vitamin B is important for cell division and growth of the baby. A vegan diet during pregnancy should only be performed under the supervision of a doctor, otherwise the child may experience severe developmental disorders.
