Sleep disorders increase the risk of heart disease

A large-scale Chinese study with almost half a million participants published in the journal "Neurology" has now shown that these people have a higher risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.

The researchers came to this conclusion after surveying 480,000 people with an average age of 51

over a decade. Participants were regularly asked if they had any symptoms of insomnia during the past week.

These include problems with falling asleep, constant or early waking up, and difficulty concentrating the following day. These were compared with heart attack and stroke data; During the study, 130,032 patients had lived through one of these life-threatening events.

Can early detection save lives?

Bad news for bad sleepers: Anyone who shows all three symptoms of insomnia increases the risk of serious cardiovascular disease by 18 percent.

For those who wake up too early and cannot fall asleep again, the degree was still about seven percent.

According to study author Dr. Liming Li from the University of Beijing is intensifying the connection of younger adults. But there are also opportunities for early detection, Li said: "If we treat those who suffer from sleep problems with behavioral therapy, we can prevent heart attacks and strokes later in life."

A disadvantage of the Chinese study: It shows, however, cause and effect have not yet been further investigated.

However, researchers agree that healthy, adequate sleep is essential for all of us.
