A lifeless man was pulled out of Glatt near Opfikon. He apparently wanted to help a friend who was in trouble.
It happened on Sunday night, in the hour after midnight. A 48-year-old man bathed with other people in Glatt, in the area of the waterfall under the Au sports complex. According to the first results from the cantonal police, the 48-year-old wanted to help a colleague who had gotten into trouble and got stuck in the water himself.
Exactly how the accident happened is still unclear. Just before one o’clock, the Center for Protection and Rescue Services received the report that a lifeless man had been pulled out of the water. Despite the immediate resuscitation, he died at the scene of the accident, police say.
Bathing water is not smooth
Opfiker building director Bruno Maurer does not remember a similar case. Happy is actually not a bathing water, he says. And at the waterfall it is especially unattractive to swim, because the water foams there. According to Maurer, the step is about 70 centimeters. The city once wanted to build a small power plant there, but the canton did not approve. Previously, a covered wooden bridge crossed Glatt at this point. About ten years ago, the victims of a fire fell, after which the city built a new bridge a little further downstream.
