The first look at jets and sharks in Steven Spielberg's upcoming version of "West Side Story" has been presented by 20th Century Fox.
The musical, if young love and the excitement between rival bands Jets and The Sharks on the streets of New York in 1957, is in production. Ansel Elgort stars like Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria, the star-crossed lovers, along with a host of other members of the first picture.
Spielberg adapts the original Broadway music, inspired by Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and the direction and choreography of Jerome Robbins. Walt Disney Studios will release the film in December 2020.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer award-winning playwright Tony Kushner has written the script for the film. Tony Award winner Justin Peck will choreograph the musicals. The film's music team includes Gustavo Dudamel from the LA Philharmonic, who will make the recording of Bernstein's iconic points.
