Today, Sega Toys announced a miniature version of its iconic arcade cabinet in Astro City. The latest in a series of mini-hardware, it will be released in Japan in December and will be packed with 36 games.
The Astro City Mini is priced at 12,800 yen ($ 119). According to Sega’s official release, Astro City Mini measures 150mm across, 67mm deep and 30mm high – but I guess the last digit is a typo. There is no word on an international release.
The first ten games that Sega reveals are Virtua Fighter, Fantasy Zone, Golden Ax, Golden Ax: The Revenge of Death Adder, Alienstorm, Alien Syndrome, Column II, Dark Edge, Puzzle & Action: Tant-R, and Changed Beast.
The miniature version is made with smaller versions of the same buttons used in full-size Astro City cabinets, with Sega’s goal to recreate the arcade experience on a very small scale.
Earlier, Sega released a mini version of Genesis (if you missed it, read Kotakureview right here), and a little Game Gear is planned for this October in Japan. Like the Sega Genesis Mini, the Astro City Mini comes with USB and HMDI cables.
Sega also sells a separate Astro City game board for 2,780 yen ($ 26). The above design may change.
The Astro City cabinet was first introduced in 1993 and has become one of the most iconic arcade game cabinets in Japan.
