ROCKWALL, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Rockwall police officer Tracy Gaines died early Monday morning due to complications from COVID-19

Officer Gaines was a high school head of resources and an air force veteran.

After a week of dealing with the virus at home, he was admitted to a local hospital on July 11 and had undergone various treatments to try to alleviate the effects of the disease.

He received life support around 21 July.

Officer Gaines was hired as a Rockwall police officer in September 2005 and most recently served as school resource manager at Rockwall High School.

During his career, he also served as head of school resources at Williams Middle School and was in charge of field training in the patrol department.

In honor of Officer Gaines’ service to the citizens of Rockwall, a troupe car has been placed at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium at 1215 TL Townsend Drive as a memorial.

“Overall, it’s just devastating. We knew we were going through a difficult time. We all prayed. We thought he would get through it, “said student Roxy Thompson.

“Every day I would go to school and he would be the first one I would see and he would always smile and wave,” said student Sam Jorden.

Jordan brought flowers to the memorial for the man she said always brightened her day.

“Such an amazing person. He made such a big impression on Rockwall and I know we will all miss him so much, ”she said.

Rockwall Police Department said Officer Gaines also had a distinguished military career serving 20 years with the Air Force before becoming a police officer.

“We are heartbroken,” Rockwall Police Chief Max Geron said in a tweet. “Tracy Gaines was a lifelong official. He was a man and a father. He was loved by the students at Rockwall HS who he protected and mentored as an SRO and will be greatly missed by his Rockwall police family and this city as a whole. “

“The Rockwall Police Department is grateful for the incredible amount of support for its wife and two sons,” the department said in a news release Monday afternoon.

Donations to help the family financially can be made here.

Funeral arrangements await.
