Rapid eruptions of meteors will scatter across the skies in Massachusetts Thursday night

Rapid blast of meteors will streak across skies in Massachusetts Thursday night

Multiple meteors per minute at peak

It will be very short. But it can be unforgettable. On Thursday night, looking east-southeast, lay in the sky, starting shortly after 11 p.m. Shortly thereafter, you can see a 40-minute burst of meteors that can reach a speed of about 400 meteors per hour! Alpha Monocerotids will radiate from near a constellation called Monoceros unicorn. Because of where this meteor shower is located relative to the constellation, some affectionately call them "Unicorn meteors." When it comes to our local weather, clouds will arrive from the west around the time of the event, but it should be worth it to try to catch meteor showers in eastern southern New England. According to EarthSky.org, the shower will be centered around 23:50, so if you want to catch the whole show, be sure to come outside before then. For best viewing, a very dark sky without obstacles (trees, hills, buildings) in the southeast is a must.
