Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition – game review and review [PC]

I have the impression that in recent months Sony has been bolder and bolder to share its exclusive titles with other players. The closer to the launch of PlayStation 5, the more likely they are to release more previously exclusive console games for PC. One of the highest acts of this kind is the transmission of a huge hit from the Guerilla Games, so Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition.

This should be a kind of gate for the next big titles. What comes next? Maybe God of War from 2018 or Spider-Man (the review would definitely be shown here too!)? Maybe someone hit from Naughty Dog? Pprobably a lot depends on accepting Aloy’s adventures and the interest they will enjoy. It’s actually about money, as is usually the case. After all, there is no element in the gaming industry that can not be handled by coins.

For a good start to the review it̵

7;s worth writing a few words about what Horizon Zero Dawn actually is. The title debuted on February 28 on PlayStation 4 and was immediately hailed as one of the best exclusive productions made on the current generation. The data from the beginning of 2019 showed 10 million copies sold. As a player, we played the role of Aloy, a red-haired “Seeker” who lived in a strange world full of mechanical monsters.

We travel through beautiful regions in a third-person perspective, and the whole game seems to be a classic example of an action game with many elements from the RPG position. However, there is no need for divorce. Who would play, already did it and who Horizon Zero Dawn is interested from the inside out, let him look at Wojtek’s review from three years ago – this one Of course you will find it on our website here.

Sony business card for PC

The project will debut on personal computers on August 7, and that is when all those who do not have a PlayStation 4 console will experience this adventure. It is worth mentioning here that the PC release is a complete release, which means that it will include a very large and well-realized expansion “The Frozen Wilds”, which was released six months after the debut of the full version.

And I’m aware of that alone The cost of Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition can cause controversy, but considering that for PLN 169 we get at least several dozen hours of new concept and brilliant fun, it stops making an impression. It seems to me to be a reasonable price, and it will undoubtedly not wait long for a discount of several dozen percent.

Optimization in Horizon Zero Dawn

Optimizing to run on personal computers is always a tricky business. We had examples of a good porting from consoles (Death Stranding) and a complete mixture (Red Dead Redemption 2) – It’s not so strange how confused they are if they are interested in buying the game. I think the numbers speak for themselves. It’s pointless for me to talk “Wierokleckie” commands to you here.

Let me start with the hardware requirements. According to the Steam subpage, these are the following:

Minimum requirements:

  • System: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3 GHz or AMD FX 6300 3.5 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (3GB) or AMD Radeon R9 290 (4GB)
  • Disk HDD: 100 GB

Recommended requirements:

  • System: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5 GHz or Ryzen 5
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 580 (8GB)
  • Disk HDD: 100 GB

My plate would be somewhere between these two – some aspects are higher than the smallest and others much weaker than recommended. It looks like:

  • System: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB)

Below I attach the results of benchmarks that allow us to run the developers in the game itself to best illustrate how it all works (or rather should) on a PC with my components. The result in the photo shows the action when each setting is set to “high” (slot machine throw me on average).

Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition - High Settings

How does it work in practice?

Horizon Zero Dawn is still so much fun to playas it was in 2017. Of course, today I see many more elements that squeeze a little. Although I probably owe it to myself, I recently played The Last of Us 2 and things look worse after that. This is especially noticeable in the face of the character during dialogues, which is clearly artificial.

If I’m talking to myself, I get the impression that the spoken words (both in Polish and English) are one thing, and the characters’ mouth movements are another. Both have their own lives and operate independently of each other. I do not remember if it was so on PlayStation 4 as well, but I hope some premiere patch will improve it. It’s not something that would ruin the game significantly, but it can certainly break the rhythm.

Optimization fails

Another thing – and most important of all – is that the tests clearly show it There should be no major liquidity issues at average settings in Horizon Zero Dawnin fact, frame drops occur very often. This is probably due in part to the specification of my PC, but that does not change the fact that since specific settings are recommended, everything should at least work fine.

Meanwhile, all it takes is a rain and an NPC collection to do it all begins to look like a stop motion animation. This can be really annoying, especially in combat, where even with medium-sized bandit camps it is very difficult to duel.

However, the developers have already promised it together with the premiere, which takes place on August 7, a patch will be released that optimizes the title. I expect a lot from it and think that everything will start to go much smoother. Right now there are moments where everything, regardless of graphics settings, goes crazy. As soon as the update takes effect and I will complete the review accordingly.

Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition is still a strong title …

… And even though it has aged, as seen in the character models, it compensates for it with the visual aspects of natural designs, which are still breathtaking today. It’s just a good project that’s worth checking out. If you like typical action RPG projects and do not own a PlayStation 4 console, then this title will be a good option for you. If you have a really powerful computer for that, I would not think twice.

As I mentioned in the review, the game can get stuck. I would put the quality of the optimization somewhere between the position from Kojima and the latest Rockstar hit – unfortunately closer to the latter (although the premiere note, as I mentioned, would change that). But if you are far from the recommended requirements, it can be average. Today, it will probably be cheaper to buy the basic version of the PS4 and the game than to invest in a powerful processor or a higher graphics card.

I even had a brilliant time despite a few trips and I’m quitting Horizon Zero Dawn for PC – there will be a big replay before it recently announced the sequel. Of course, I count on the promised corrections. In fact, a good game will defend itself – and that’s Aloy’s story.
