Fortnite has finally added cars to the game with its latest update: Joy Ride.
The battle royale title has allowed many vehicles to come and go over previous updates, including airplanes, helicopters, boats, golf carts, driftboards and ATVs, but regular old cars are a new addition. Their introduction was teased back in the trailer for the launch of Chapter 2: Season 3, which flooded the map, but is now available with the game’s latest update.
So far, there seem to be only four types of car available. There’s the middle road Islander Prevalent, the sporty Victory Motors Whiplash, the OG Bear pickup and the big rig Titano Mudflap. They are easy enough to find around the map, but you need to keep them filled with gas (which you can find on gas pumps or in disposable gas cans).
In our short time of using the cars, they definitely seem to change some of the game’s dynamics. Not only do they allow fast movement over some of the more inaccessible parts of the map but they are also quite deadly. It is not difficult to get some quick eliminations just by driving people down, and they are hard enough to smash through the walls. The different cars have different top speeds and health bars depending on the brand, but they can generally take a pace.
Perhaps the most unexpected aspect of the cars, however, is that they come with radio stations, even though at the time of writing these have been “temporarily disabled.” We’ve seen reports and videos of cars playing tracks from the likes of Lady Gaga, Drake and Ariana Grande. But it seems like you have to wait to hear the music yourself.
