A popular Pacific Beach bar and restaurant was shut down indefinitely by the county Friday after videos surfaced on social media showing some protectors mingling shoulder to shoulder and without facings.
Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said that several cases of non-compliance
The public health order was reported on Thursday, the first day the restaurants were
may open their doors to eat customers.
“One of the most irregular
of these examples is the restaurant El Prez, “said the supervisor Fletcher
at Friday’s information health.
“They didn’t do the basic things we ask people to do, ”he explained. “It created an imminent health and safety risk. The measures you saw in the video can trigger an outbreak and jeopardize our ability as a county to move forward in the state̵
Fletcher further described Thursday’s scene at El Prez as disturbing and an “obvious disregard for public health order and apparent discrepancy.”
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer also made an example of El Prez at his daily public briefing, calling the scene unacceptable. The mayor warned that similar closure orders would be issued to other facilities that did not meet the requirements.
El Prez posted a statement on his Facebook page that read in part: “We thought we were following the guidelines, but we were wrong. Quite simply, everything spiraled out of control.” The post was deleted shortly after.
San Diego Police
Departmental officers closed the restaurant on Friday afternoon at the county’s
SDPD captain Bernie Colon said NBC 7 restaurant staff were willing to make the necessary business model changes that would keep them in line with public health.
“We are working with our various agencies to make sure they have a solid plan to present to the county for approval,” said Captain Colon.
Currently the restaurant is
closed until further notice.
“They will have the chance
meeting with health officials to review their revised plans for how they will open again
and ensure compliance to make sure nothing similar happens again, ”
No other restaurants in
according to Colon.
