For most of this season, the Patriots were close to the bottom of the league in available payroll for the 2020 season. Now they are close to the top.
The Patriots have more than $ 35 million in capacity space right now, the third most in the NFL, according to OverTheCap.com.
So what changed? To begin with, they decided on a couple of old contract disputes (the moment immediately after Cam Newton had to sign a contract for an agreement) to free up $ 7 million in capacity space.
Then the Patriots had several players to opt out of the 2020 season, which means that all their salaries for 2020 go out of the cap and move to 2021. For most teams, that would cause the 2021 cap, but the Patriots were already in good shape for 2021.
So the Patriots are sitting pretty right now, if they choose to sign some free agents. The reality, however, is that there are not many free agents to sign up for. So the Patriots may just be patting this year and rolling over their available capacity space for 2020 to 2021. Whether the Patriots have lost many players and will have a list that looks very different from last year, they remain in strong shape to rebuild their list at a time when many other teams are worried about an expected significant decline in next year’s cap. The Patriots always seem to be ahead of the game.
