Ohio teenager Ethan Lindenberger defies his mother, gets vaccinated

Ethan Lindenberger grew up in Norwalk, Ohio, with an anti-wax mother who refused to get him his shots. Now that he is 18, Lindenberger makes headlines for his decision to defy his mother and be vaccinated, reports USA Today . "My parents think vaccines are some kind of state system," wrote the teenage years at Reddit when he first decided to come out for guidance. "God knows how I still live." He received more than 1,000 responses that gave detailed advice on how to go and Lindenberger started with shots for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza and HPV, reports Washington Post . On Tuesday, Lindenberger went to ABC's Good Morning America to tell her story.

"I had grown up to just hear that I was not vaccinated because it was best for me," he said. But after seeing different opinions online, he did his own research and concluded that his parents were wrong. "It was as if he was spitting on me," Lindenberger's mother, Jill Wheeler, told Undark's website. When drafting to GMA Wheeler said she opposed vaccinations because she heard of bad reactions: "It scared me." Some states are starting to make it easier for "mature minors" to make their own medical decisions, notes the ABC story, but most states still leave that responsibility entirely in the parents' hands. (A decrease in vaccinations is blamed for this abuse of measles.)
