Samsung's solid-state devices (SSDs) are about to get much faster. The company already has some of the best SSDs on the market, and it introduces two new SSD series that will benefit from the new PCIe 4.0 interface for dramatically increased capacity.
The new Samsung SSDs are now called PM1733 and PM1735, and between them will introduce 19 new SSD models. They come in two form factors: PCIe Supplementary Cards and 2.5-inch U.2 types. Between these two styles, they come in storage capacity ranging from 0.8 TB (or 800 GB) at the lowest end up to 30.72 TB at the highest end.
The new speeds offered by PCIe 4.0 came with AMD's Ryzen 3000 CPU. We saw that Gigabyte's Aorus brand launched an SSD to take advantage of the new connection, and it offered sequential read and write speeds of 5,000 MB / s and 4,400 MB / s. It amazed the Samsung 970 Evo Plus's / write performance at 3,500 MB / s and 3,300 MB / s via PCIe 3.0.
But Samsung's new SSDs can still go even faster. Samsung claims sequential write speeds on all the new devices at 3,800 MB / s. But the read speeds jump higher. For the U.2 devices, Samsung says they can hit 6,400 MB / s, while the card-station drivers fly to 8,000 MB / s in sequential readings.
Other techniques being played
Unfortunately, performance like this is going to come at a high price, and these SSDs are likely to fit in business and business environments. Samsung sees them as applicable to servers, and the high sequence speeds have more to offer as video editors than ordinary computer users.
For this purpose, Samsung has introduced a special feature that makes the new SSDs better suited for workplaces. The new devices have a fail-in-place technology that keeps them running even when a NAND chip on the device dies. With SSD copying over which data it can to other free space on the device.
Samsung has also implemented virtualization technology on the devices so that they can create up to 64 smaller SSDs for virtual workspaces. And since no new technology can feel like new without AI, Samsung has integrated machine learning to improve reliability.
Samsung did not mention a date for commercial availability. Samsung also did not mention when general consumers could see these innovations in SSD speed and reliability.
