Astronaut launch: What you need to know about NASA, SpaceX’s historic launch

NASA and SpaceX will try to make history on Wednesday as they launch astronauts into space from American Earth for the first time since 2011.

Long time coming

The last time astronauts went into space from US Earth was when the Atlantis space shuttle was launched for the last time in 2011. This will be the first time humans have flown on a brand new spacecraft in the US since 1981. The rocket will blast from the same cushion there the space shuttle at the latest in 2011.

It’s a commercial flight

The launch of SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is part of NASA’s commercial crew program. The program was launched in 2010. It is funded by the US government and administered by NASA through which private sellers develop and operate vehicles to transport US and international astronauts to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX beat Boeing first.

The astronauts go way back

The two astronauts who will test SpaceX’s brand new rocket ship and return human orbital launches to the United States are classmates and friends. They are also veteran space fliers married to veteran space fliers and fathers of young sons. Retired marine colleague Doug Hurley will be responsible for launch and landing, a fitting mission for the pilot of NASA’s last space shuttle mission. Air Force Col. Bob Behnken will oversee the meeting at the International Space Station.

How long is the trip?

The astronauts are expected to take about 19 hours to reach the International Space Station. This means they arrive at the space station on Thursday morning. But how long they will be there remains uncertain. Once on the ISS, astronauts will stay for an indefinite period of time between one month and 110 days to assist the three astronauts already on board with scientific research.

NASA wants spectators to stay home

In the coronavirus age, Brevard County officials and NASA are split if it’s a good idea for spectators to show up for next week’s space launch. During normal times, the beaches and roads along the space coast would be filled with people eager to witness the first Florida astronaut in nine years. NASA and SpaceX are urging people to stay home next Wednesday for security reasons. But Brevard County officials are rolling out the welcome mat in an attempt to start a tourism industry hit hard in the spring by coronavirus lockdowns.
