Minecraft Earth comes to a closed beta later this summer. To tip you over, Mojang has released a short video showing some games. It is extremely charming.
So far, everything we have seen on Minecraft Earth has the exceptionally impressive reality and "people occlusion" where players build structures in the real life that they can then walk around, and into. It is impressive on its own hand, and knew for sure I had it when I saw it on E3, but there are more games in this game than just placing and destroying blocks.
As you walk around in Minecraft Earth you will see a map of your surroundings similar to those of Pokemon Go or Harry Potter: Wizards Unite according to This video was released yesterday at Minecraft YouTube Channel. On that map you will find "tappables", which are objects you can tap that can serve you creatures called "mobs" in Minecraft parlance or different types of blocks and objects.
What is more interesting is the building boards. Building plates are the spaces where you can build in Minecraft Earth as you do in miniature on a table top or other flat surface before placing the plate anywhere else, where everything you built is being built. The building plates actually correspond to the various biomaterials available in ordinary Minecraft . In the video I saw a jungle, arctic and desert biome, and the story said there will be more biomes you can collect.
It's still impressive to me how much Minecraft they squeeze into this magnified reality phone game – it turns out that you will also be able to collect and change skins, just like in the fullsize game. If you sign up for the closed beta that starts later this summer, you also get an exclusive skin. Part of me would rather just be Minecraft Steve, but just for nostalgia's sake.
