Two screens are better than one.

Microsoft is digging into the future of folding files with an ambitious dual-screen device, with two ultra-thin 5.6-inch AMOLED screens tied by a 360-degree hinge. This pocketable-enabled Android smartphone marks the latest in the Surface range, tailored for mobile productivity.

Microsoft has spent the past year completing the hardware and software experiences for the Surface Duo, and the company now feels like the device is ready for the public, ahead of the original “Holiday 2020” time frame. Unfortunately, the wait between October 2019 and today means that the hardware on the inside does not use the latest and greatest.

Surface Duo specs

The Redmond giant has confirmed that the Surface Duo comes with a Snapdragon 855 and 6 GB of RAM that drives things under the hood. It also has a 3577mAh battery and 128 GB or 256 GB UFS 3.0 storage. Although these are last year’s specifications, the Snapdragon 855 is still an excellent processor that will not show its age soon.

Microsoft also has details on the Surface Duo’s dual screens, which are now confirmed to be AMOLED panels with a resolution of 1800×1350. They are also 100% SRGB and DCI-P3 color accurate, with a pixel density of 401 for a sharp and colorful display experience. Microsoft calls them “PixelSense Fusion Displays” and are designed to be identical so that images and apps do not look different on either screen. It also supports the Surface Pen, including the latest Slim Pen and older Surface Pen models.

As for the camera, the Surface Duo comes with a single 11MP sensor above the right screen that can 4K video recording. It’s fair to say that this camera will not be an iPhone or Pixel competitor, as that is not what Microsoft has focused on with the first generation. However, the camera application uses AI for photo optimization, which can improve things.

Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Windows + Devices, said the following about Surface Duo in today’s announcement:

“When we created the Surface seven years ago, we wanted to challenge the convention by redefining the expectations of what a productivity device should be and what it should do. Simply put; we wanted to help people do things. We did not consider combining two existing devices – the tablet and the laptop. We had a vision of how we could take the best parts of each to create something completely new.To find the perfect intersection between hardware and software that unlocks a more intuitive way of working and creating We met a certain skepticism, but in the end a new category was born that drove growth for the PC industry. More than that, behaviors began to change. People’s eyes were opened to the idea that touch would not just be for tablets and phones. to only when you were sitting in front of a traditional computer. “

“Today, as we look forward to the next wave of mobile productivity and creativity, we see the same opportunity to create something new with the Surface Duo – not to reinvent the phone, but to inspire people to think about how they want to use the device in their pocket. Available for pre-order in the US as of today, the Surface Duo brings together the power of Microsoft 365 experiences and the complete ecosystem of Android mobile apps into one device, with two screens that you can take anywhere. “

Carrier support

The good news is that the Surface Duo will be available for purchase unlocked from day one via the Microsoft Store or BestBuy, and will work on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. This model will include eSIM in addition to nanoSIM as well. American customers also have the opportunity to buy a locked Surface Duo via AT&T if that is what they prefer.

Surface Duo availability

The Surface Duo will be available in the US from September 10 at a starting price of $ 1399 for the 128 GB model. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not announce the availability of the Surface Duo outside the United States today.
