Following a day of rumors, today it's official: Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. has bought Versace, the Italian luxury goods house founded by the late Gianni Versace in 1978 and now creatively helmed by his sister Donatella Versace for more than $ 2.12 billion. The Michael Kors Holding Company will be renamed Capri Holdings Limited with the acquisition.
"This is a very exciting moment for Versace." Said Donatella Versace in a statement. "It has been more than 20 years since I took over the company along with my brother Santo and daughter Allegra. I'm proud that Versace remains very strong in both fashion and modern culture. Versace is not only synonymous with its iconic and unmistakable style, but with being inclusive and embracing diversity, as well as empowering people to express themselves. Santo, Allegra, and I recognize that this next step will allow Versace to reach its full potential. "
The Versace family will retain a role in the company, with Donatella, who has had a string of editorial and commercial successes since her Spring 201
John Idol, CEO and chairman of Capri Holdings Limited, said, "Donatella's iconic style is at the heart of the design aesthetic of Versace. She will continue to lead the company's creative vision. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Donatella on Versace's next chapter of growth. "
The acquisition is the latest in a recent wave of industry consolidation that has seen Ermenegildo Zegna purchase Thom Browne and the Puig Group take a majority stake in Dries van Nuts. With the Versace purchase, Capri Holdings Limited expands its international profile, having bought Jimmy Choo, the British accessories business, for $ 1.2 billion last year.
