Melatonin is America's most commonly used sleep aid, but it should be …




Melatonin has been widely used for people of all ages to help them fall asleep. And most people would probably sing their praises – especially those who have been able to get a better night's sleep after using it on their children.

We are not saying that anyone is wrong – it is without a counter and usually safe in the recommended doses, but there are definitely things to pay attention to when using sleep aid.

According to Consumer Reports, 86% of people who said they tried a diet supplement for sleep melatonin chose as their alternative. And about 25% of the people who tried it said they got great sleep.

"Melatonin has an incredible safety record, no doubt about it," Dr. Mark Moyad, Jenkins / Pomkempner Head of Prevention and Alternative Medicine at the University of Michigan, TIME. "But it's a hormone, and you don't want to move with hormones until you know what they're doing."

Young women who want to become pregnant or breastfeeding mothers should not use melatonin, Medical News Today says, because it can affect the reproductive system.

Another reason why doctors do not openly give full approval for melatonin is that some studies have shown that it can affect glucose regulation in people who have diabetes and have certain genetic characteristics.

Melatonin can increase seizures in people with seizure disorders, exacerbate bleeding disorders or symptoms of depression, and interact with a number of other people and medications.

Moyad said his advice is to treat supplements as a medicine, so don't take a pill unless you need it. Simply put, use restraint with melatonin because of the lack of evidence proving that it is safe in high doses over long periods of time.

He especially warned parents who give melatonin to their healthy children, mostly because of the lack of unknowns.

Do you know the recommended dosage? Michael Grandner, director of the Sleep and Health Research program at the University of Arizona, said "anything between 0.5 mg and 5 mg."

It seems like a fairly wide range, but he recommended a dose of 0.5 mg, when used for repeated sleep cycle control, be taken three to five hours before going to bed. Taking a 5 mg dose should be done by those who want to take it right before bed.
