LG is experimenting with scrollable smartphones

LG, the company behind the ill-bent, swingable TV set, wants the same flexible screen technology for smartphones, according to one of the company's senior executives.

In an interview with Tom & # 39; s Guide, the Korean electronics company CTO confirmed that the company is experimenting with scrollable and collapsible phones.

"We are exploring many different form factors for phones, including folding and rolling," says LG CTO IP Park.

"Because the screen technology has become so large that it can make it very flexible form factors. And with 5G, if the market requires much larger screens, we have to put it or roll it. So we will explore."

LG is not the first company to look at new form factors for phones. Samsung recently showed a prototype for a collapsible phone that should make its debut in the first half. The Chinese company Royole also showed a folding phone, FlexPai, but it is currently only available in China.

While not necessarily surprising, LG's entry into space is great news for anyone who is excited about making folding phones a reality. The company has been experimenting with flexible screens for years, culminating in the unveiling of the LG Signature OLED TV R, a 65-inch TV that rolls up when not in use.

This trick, which you can see in action in the video clip above, is possible thanks to some smart technology. Instead of mounting the flexible OLED panel on a piece of glass as a traditional TV, LG has mounted the display on a flexible substance that allows scrolling.

The tank can be rolled and roll up to 50,000 times without breaking. The LG that applies the same concepts to smartphones is particularly interesting, as such a phone can actually be rolled in contrast to the collapsible units Royole and Samsung have proved.

Although it is not clear whether this type of rolling technology is evenly portable in a smartphone shape factor, it is yet another sign that folding and rolling phones are more than just a fitting hug. ! The function (f, b, e, v, n, t, s) {if (f.fbq) return, n = f.fbq = function () {n.callMethod?
