The LA deputy, 31, who was shot in an ambush in Compton, is pictured at the hospital on the phone to President Trump who called her to tell her that “the country was behind her.”
- Claudia Apolinar, 31, was shot in the torso and head on September 12
- She was still able to help her partner, an unnamed 24-year-old man, to safety
- He has been released from the hospital but she remains there
- On Saturday, Trump called her to tell her that the country was behind her
- Their attackers have not yet been named; he ambushed their vehicle and then fled
- His only obvious motive was that the couple was law enforcement
- Trump, a lawyer for solid law and order, said he should be subjected to a “quick death sentence”
President Trump called the two LA deputies who were shot in a drive-by attack in Compton last week to tell them that the country was behind them as they recovered from their injuries in hospital.
They were shot in the head by an as yet unidentified shooter who opened fire on his patrol car in Compton on September 12. The shooter fled and is still being chased by police.
One of the deputies, a 24-year-old man, has been released from hospital but his partner Claudia Apolinar, a 31-year-old mother, remains under medical care.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department shared photos of her in her hospital bed when one of her co-workers held up the phone to her so that President Trump could wish her luck.

Claudia Apolinar, 31, at the hospital writes out answers to President Trump for her staff to pass on because she can not speak. She was shot in the head, as was her 24-year-old partner. The LA Sheriff’s Department shared these photos over the weekend and hid her face
Apolines are shot several times in the torso and in the head. The sheriff’s department said she was grateful to hear from Trump
Apolinar with her husband and Sergeant Frederickson (left) and in bed, print out answers for Frederickson to pass on to President Trump because she can not speak
She can not speak so answered by writing down answers for him to forward to Trump.
The post reads: ‘A week ago today, a nasty and heartless criminal tried to murder two heroes who work hard every day to protect you.
‘The outflow of love and support from our department, the LA County Sheriff, the community and indeed from around the world has been overwhelming but also much appreciated!
‘This week # potus45 @realdonaldtrump called both our deputies to check their mood, wish them a speedy recovery and remind them that the #American people are behind them and that the coward who hurt them will be brought to #just !!
‘Here you can see @lasdtransit Sergeant Frederickson with our #hero and her husband when the president called her at the ICU. Because of her injuries, Sergeant Frederickson forwarded his written answers to #presidenttrump.
The couple was shot when an armed man (left opens fire and right escapes the scene) opened fire in a patrol car in Compton on Saturday night. Both deputies were hit in the head by shots, but miraculously they are expected to survive
Together with the male deputy, 31-year-old deputy Claudia Apolinar was injured in the ambush. Although she took several bullets – one in the face and several to her upper body – Apolinar managed to get her partner to safety, apply a tour and radio for help
Authorities said the deputies, who both graduated from the police academy 14 months ago, each received several shots. Apolinar is depicted during his degree
“Both deputies and their families greatly appreciated the call!”
Trump previously said the shooter should face one “quick trial death penalty” if one of the deputies died.
Apolinar was able to pull her partner to safety, apply a tour to her wounds and radio for help even though she herself shot several times. She is praised as a heroine.
It is unclear what the gunman’s motive for attacking the couple was beyond the fact that they are police officers. Sagittarius has been described as a black male aged 28 to 30.
The shooting in Compton sparked nationwide controversy as spectators filmed and mocked the bloody officers at the scene and protested outside the hospital where they were being taken for treatment.
The videos from protesters outraged many critics who said the shooting was the result of police sentiment driven by a turbulent summer of demonstrations against police brutality.
Trump has taken a firm position of law and order.
