The Observatory – Agencies: Fujifilm said it would seek regulatory approval in Japan to market an antiviral drug as a treatment for Covid-19, after a study showed it helped patients with mild conditions recover from the coronavirus faster.
According to Bloomberg: The company said in a statement today, Wednesday, that it plans to apply for approval to expand the use of Avigan in early October in Japan, the drug also known as favipiravir, which is currently approved for use in Japan to treat the new flu.
Fujifilm shares increased 5% in Tokyo trading following the announcement.

The clinical trial was randomized, which means that doctors did not know which patients were receiving treatment and there were no safety problems.
Other drugs that have shown some effect against Covid-19 in rigorous clinical trials are Gilead Sciences Inc.’s Remdesivir antiviral. And steroids like 60-year-old dexamethasone.
