Sharon Brown of Bonafide Provisions told Express.co.uk dieters should eat more beets.

She said: "Beets themselves are not necessary or even recommended for those who follow a ketogenic diet, because beets are high in carbohydrates. But when I had my nutritional practice and worked with people with ketogenic diet, I often recommended a supplement containing a high concentration of dehydrated beet containing betaine ̵

1; a nutrient that supports the liver and gall bladder function.

"Supportive Liver and gall bladder function is crucial for those who follow a ketogenic diet because the liver and gall bladder work together to break down fat and make it ketones.

"Many try the keto diet and think they do not experience the benefits and one reason for this may be that their liver and gall bladder do not work optimally."

Sharon also recommended eating bone broth. She said, "To get the benefits of ketogenic diet, your liver and gall bladder must work properly so they can break down all the fat you eat and turn into ketones."

"That's why consuming bone broth on ketogenic diet is very beneficial, since bone broth is a whole source of glycine – another important nutrient that supports liver and gall bladder function and helps the body digest fat."

So what is ketosis? Entering a state of ketosis is when your body switches from burning glucose or sugar to fuel to burn fat for fuel.

A ketogenic diet will be one that is rich in fat with limited carbohydrates, which the body converts into glucose.

Sharon added: "Unfortunately, many people try to take the ketogenic diet this macronutrial profile as a license to charge their plates with low-quality, obese foods such as processed meats and cheeses.

" While quality meats and cheeses can be excellent sources of essential and health promoting Nutrients, such as biologically available B12 and calcium, are not enough nutrients for overall care.

"People need a complete complement of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants delivered by eating a variety of foods, especially vegetables."

So what should y you put on your plate if you follow the keto diet?

"It's important for everyone, not just those who follow a ketogenic diet, to get a variety of vegetables in the diet to ensure they get all the nutrients needed to thrive," Sharon says.

"The best way to do this is to eat seasonally – this will ensure that you never get into a food / nutrition box."

"For people with ketogenic diet, I recommend filling your plate with mainly non-starch seasonal vegetables and healthy fats such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds and lawn dairy (if tolerated), with the remainder consisting of fatter slices of high-quality protein such as lawn and lamb, beet-high poultry and wild-caught fatty fish such as salmon and sardines.
