A new study published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and led by Prof. Riccardo Polosa Head of CoEAR – Research Center for Reduction of Injury at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine at the University of Catania, proposes l The use of electronic cigarettes can turn some of the injuries caused by tobacco smoke in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) . Furthermore, the use of e-cig seems to improve the objective and subjective parameters for COPD in the long term.
In a 3 year study, investigators conducted a prospective review of changes in objective and subjective respiratory parameters in a total of 44 patients with COPD, comparative 22 patients who quit smoking or had decreased significantly due to the use of e-cig and 22 control patients who were smokers who did not use e-cig at the time of the study. The convincing results of the research showed that patients with COPD passing through the electronic cigarette had positive effects even after 3 years
And here are the results:
– marked attenuation of respiratory infections and exacerbations of COPD, with a Breathing Physiology not exacerbated by the use of e-cig
Constant improvement in general health condition and performance of physical activity,
– Recurrent rate of cigarette to very low tobacco (only 8.3% of patients returned to smoking.)
It is important to emphasize that even COPD patients who used e-cig but continued to smoke conventional cigarettes ( dual users ) daily use of conventional cigarettes with at least 75% and showed improvement in respiratory parameters and quality of life.
Although the sample size of the study was relatively small, the results could provide preliminary evidence that long-term use E-cig screen should not lead to serious health problems in COPD patients.
COPD is a chronic and progressive pulmonary disease that is highly disabling and not completely reversible, mainly caused by cigarette smoking and affecting Italy about 3 million people
"Quitting smoking is therefore an important strategy not only to prevent COPD but also to stop its progress towards more difficult stages of the disease – commented Polosa – because many patients with COPD continue to smoke despite their symptoms, the electronic cigarette can be an effective alternative and it is safe for tobacco cigarettes even in this exposed population. During the three-year observation period only Two patients (8.3%) were smoking and both patients were already double users "he added .
This is an important consideration because smoking populations in smoking populations are not effective due to the high relapse rate.
Dr Pasquale Caponetto co-author of the study suggests that the low rate of recurrence for smokers passing to e-cig is due to "these instruments reproduce the experience of smoking and rituals companions with major compensation effects both physical and behavior ".
In terms of health improvement, co-author dr. Massimo Caruso claims that " halving COPD acquisition in patients who had stopped or significantly reduced the use of tobacco cigarettes after switching to e-cig is an extraordinary finding confirming the potential
