(ANSA) – BRAZIL, JULY 16 – The judge of the Brazilian Supreme Court, Gilmar Mendes, has “warned” the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, about the possibility of being tried by the International Criminal Court for how his government handled the coronavirus pandemic.
Mendes, currently in Europe, spoke by telephone with Bolsonaro last Monday when he “warned him of the risk that the handling of the pandemic would reach the International Criminal Court”, writes the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo today.
Last month, the Hague tribunal began investigating a complaint against the former Labor and Democracy Party (Pdt) by the Green head of state for former presidential candidate Ciro Gomes. According to the website that specializes in legal issues, Conjur, the beginning of the analysis does not mean that Bolsonaro has already been formally investigated.
Mendes is the same magistrate who came into the hurricane earlier this week to say that the Brazilian army is also “complicit in the genocide”
