As the number of coronavirus cases in Michigan continues to increase, a national website that once praised the state for containing the virus now says the risk of an outbreak.

Non-profit COVID Act Now, which tracks the spread of coronavirus across the country, says Michigan’s COVID-19 risk level and infection rate are now high. On June 17, the site stated that Michigan was about to contain the outbreak.

The Michigan Department of Health reported 610 new coronavirus cases in the state on Wednesday, which is the highest number of new cases since May 20. It also reported 10 deaths.

Nonprofit sites state that Michigan counties with a critical warning of a coronavirus outbreak include: Alpena, Berrian, Clinton, Hillsdale, Ionia, Iosco, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Newaygo, Shiawassee, St. Clair and St. Joseph County.

In southeastern Michigan, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties, there is still a medium risk, with Macomb County high risk.

COVID Act Now provides information that determines how fast coronavirus spreads. Here’s a breakdown of how Michigan’s data looks like a high-risk state.

  • Infection rate: On average, each person with COVID-19 infects 1.14 people, which is marked as a high risk and shows that the rate of infection is growing.
  • Positive test speed: A low percentage (2.3%) of COVID tests were positive, suggesting sufficiently widespread, aggressive testing in Michigan to detect most new cases. Identifying and isolating new cases can help contain COVID without locking.
  • ICU beds are used: As of July 8, COVID Act Now says Michigan could probably handle another wave of coronavirus, with 12% of hospital beds currently occupied in the state. Ideally, Michigan has about 2,961 ICU beds.
  • Contact tracking: With insufficient tracking to stop COVID-19 spread, Michigan can detect 48% of new infections in 48 hours. At present, Michigan has 1,050 contact trackers, while 2,175 are needed for adequate tracking.
