Health officials look for respiratory diseases for 2 lives, hospital 18 from the help center

Two residents of a Virginia Help have died and 18 more have been hospitalized with respiratory symptoms over the past 11 days, which led to the Fairfax County health care professionals initiating an outbreak investigation at the Springfield facility, officials said Thursday.

The Fairfax County Health Department announced Greenspring probe after 54 residents of 263 were reported to be ill with symptoms ranging from coughing to pneumonia, departmental officials said in a statement.

The cause of death of the two residents was not immediately identified, the statement said, but the tests are performed by the Virginia Department of Health and Inova Health System.

The statement said that the facility has collaborated with health care providers and "appropriate measures have been taken to reduce the risk of infection and continue to keep residents safe, including closure of the facility for new entry, discontinue group activities, keep hospitals in their rooms and increase cleaning. "

A call to Greenspring was not returned on Thursday, and the facility's management could not be reached.
