Final Fantasy XIthe manufacturer announced yesterday that the game will get a new storyline, in an incredibly lovely little August update letter to players.

While Square Enix continues to maintain its first MMORPG through regular fixes, Final Fantasy XI has not received any new history content since 2015 Rhapsodies of Vana’diel update, which more or less tied up all the existing story strings in the game. Now Akihiko Matsui, the game’s maker and a long time veteran of Square Enix, says the story will have another chapter to it.

“The most exciting news I have to share is that a whole new story is coming to Vana’diel!” he wrote in the game’s update letter from August. “This story, which will play during many version updates rather than just a few, explores a side of Vana’diel that has never seen the light of day.”

Players must play and finish Rhapsodies of Vana’diel content to access it though, so if you, like me, are fascinated by the promises of a backwater MMORPG whose world was built over almost two decades, it’s time to start working.

I would be lying if I said that the prospect of downloading dozens of hours of a 2002 game does not feel scary, but Matsui’s update letter has actually inspired me a bit. I mean, it’s just so beautifully personal and healthy. Here he talks about the weather:

On an unprocessed note, it occurs to me that most of my greetings begin with talking about the weather or other seasonal topics, which I’m sure some of you are pretty banal about. For those of you who live outside of Japan, I have often asked you to imagine the weather in a place you may have never set foot before – now I would like you to do the opposite and tell me about how summer is where you come from. Some places have wet, sticky summers, and others have hot, dry summers. I think learning about the world is an incredibly fulfilling subject, so let me know how summer is where you are from. “

This is how all service game updates should be posted. I’m completely serious when I say that I might dive head first Final Fantasy XI only for the note notes.
