Elon Musk says SpaceX has mounted shiny Starship test rocket – GeekWire

For weeks, photographers have taken pictures of a retro-looking, shiny stainless steel rocket that has taken shape at SpaceX's launch site in South Texas – and tonight, space commander Elon Musk declared that the composition

Musk tweeted a picture of what appears to be about 120 feet long "Starship Hopper", consisting of three sections assembled on SpaceX's Boca Chica plant.

"This is a real picture, not a representation," wrote Musk. But the rocket looks bad as the illustration that Musk shared several days earlier – or, for that matter, the pointed top articles that were all the rage in the 1940s.

Starship is the latest incarnation of the spacecraft previously known as the interplanetary transport system, Mars Colonial Transport, Big Falcon Rocket or BFR.

Musk says that the fuel-efficient Starship, when combined with a large rocket booster called Super Heavy, can be used for transcontinental point-to-point travel on Earth, satellite constellation, travel around the moon and moon's surface and trips to Mars and back. .

A new type of stainless steel alloy is used as it is the best way to craft craftsmanship when zooming through the atmosphere. "Starship will look like liquid silver". Musk wrote .

The craft that has taken shape in Texas is supposed to fly short hops to train launches and landings, just as SpaceX's rocket platform and its successor, F9R Dev, were used as test beds for Falcon 9 booster landings in the 2012-2014 time frame.

Although Musk explained that the composition was complete, there is still more work to be done. For example, shock absorbers must be installed on the foot of the landing legs. The engines on the rocket will also be replaced with methane fuel Raptor engines.

"Motors currently on Starship jumps are a mix of Raptor development and operational parts" Musk explained last weekend . "The first treadmill to be fired is almost ready-made in California. Probably burns next month."

Card jump test may begin in February or March. "This is for suborbital VTOL tests," he said in one of the evening's tweets . "The Orbital version is higher, has thicker skins (will not wrinkle) and a smooth curved nose."

Musk said he plans to provide a detailed update on the Starship architecture in March or April. The first upscale, orbital class prototype should take place in June, he said.

The aim is to get Starship and Super Heavy Booster ready for passengers in the mid-2020s to send Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and an entourage of artists around the moon … and set the stage for Mars travel.

SpaceX has clearly picked up the evolution of Starship developments over the past month and the fact that the company is more than half way through a $ 500 million funding round may have something to do with it.

It is interesting that the Starship composition has taken place outside the full picture of SpaceX paparazzi. Here's a selection of pictures from the last month:
