After another route on his home floor Friday night against Pacers, David's head coach David Fizdale was asked what was wrong with his team's defense. He had a very definite but simple answer.
"Everybody," he told NorthJersey.com's Chris Iseman.
The Knicks are the second-last in defensive rating in the NBA this season at 113.5 and it's not hard to believe the team's 10-32 record. And Fizdale doesn't think it is lackadaisical play from his team, but it's rather the system he's trying to run.
"We are struggling with the concepts right now," Fizdale said. "We really do, and the biggest is the weak side of our defense and understand how to cope with coverage. That is typical. In my conversations with other coaches who have coached similar type teams, it was always their biggest problem, was the ball movement, may them to share the ball and make them understand how to defend on the weak side. "
However, this has not always been the question for Knicks. At the beginning of the season, they actually played well on the defensive side of the ball. But as teams start to see what works and what is not done, adjustments are made.
Knicks have not been able to make the same adjustments, and this leads to failure.
"When the year goes, you add the more dynamic actions and things like that," Fizdale said. "And when we started moving through the year, we began to see more and more packages of games and different things that teams do. Cute things they do to confuse you. As it is, and new situations come up, It was like," Oh, I just figured this out. Now I have to protect these two things that the golden state threw at me like I never saw before. ""
But at the time Knicks perceives it, it's too late in the fourth quarter and another loss is busy on their record. Of course, losses are not the end of the world for this team being rebuilt, and would love even better drafting positions than they already have. From Saturday, the fourth place in the lottery.
Talking about the fourth, it's also a problem for Knicks. The fourth quarter has not been kind to this team who cannot close games when they lead. Three quarters of solid basketball is played, but when the fourth comes around, bad decisions on the offensive end are even worse on defensive.
"These teams are bombing you in the gym," Fizdale said. "And your defensive score and your defensive goal goal and all these things are skyrockets, just because of a patch in the game."
But that's okay because Knicks is a young team and learns along the way, right?
"A lap around the league is usually a great help to many young players just because they get to see all the different slots at the end of the year that will be thrown on them," Fizdale says. "And so when next year it rolls around, they are not shielded by it."
Hopefully this is the case for Knicks next season. But right now it has not been nice for Fizdale group and there is a lot of season left to play.
