LAS VEGAS – UFC President Dana White thought of the thrill that leads to and after the UFC 226's gathering event would erase the memory of what happened between Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou.
"The card was so bad we had a bad fight – what should you do?" White said at the press conference after the match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
As for the fighters who entered the cage, White was almost not as sanguine. However, Lewis (20-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC), who had a unanimous decision, managed to perform better than Ngannou (11-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) in UFC's executive assessment.
White did not agree with Lewi's own assessment ̵
Ngannous achievement? White suggests that it was the result of a signaling error.
Ngannou "let his ego run away with him" after a rapid increase in which White believed that "he would be the next guy."
"Great time" White said. "I can tell that his ego completely ran away with him. The minute that happens to you in the game begins to fall apart. I had some personal meetings with him, like other people in the organization, and this guy's ego was looked out of control. "
Exec cited Ngannous's decision to fly to France before a blasphemous title shot against former former Stipe Miocic as evidence of the cameraman's fall.
"Ego is what made Francis Ngannou," concluded White.
What did Lewis do, was a chronic bad back. "Black Beast" reported that he had back spasms during the match, a problem that interrupted a match at UFC 216 against ex-champ Fabricio Werdum.
White gave Lewis a passport for former fighting that was exciting – a credit Ngannou was not given – and was more concerned that the injury could hinder his future career.
"He's a funny guy – he's funny," said White of Lewis. "When he comes in and throws, the battles are exciting, but he always has a problem with his back. And that will be a problem. You do not want to go in there with a bad back against Daniel Cormier. But I like him, and I do not think his stock was released at all.
"Tonight is the last time he was in a boring game. The card was so good people will forget it. And the heavyweight championship was so good, it was immediately erased by people's memories.
