Nick Harvey's father has dementia and been hospital, so he had not been to his son's house in East Sussex, England, all year.
But on Sunday, Harvey invited his father to lunch. When he arrived, Paul Harvey, 79, went straight to the piano.
"It's like a magnet to him – he's made of music," says Nick Harvey in a written interview with The Washington Post.
That his son's piano, Paul Harvey, a former composer and concert pianist, played a classic piece first. Nick Harvey recorded it on his phone.
"I didn't know how many more chances I would get to catch him playing so," says Nick Harvey, who is also a composer and writes music for British television shows.
Then Nick Harvey asked his father to play "Where is the Sunshine", a component Paul Harvey composed in the 1980s as music director at a British high school. Nick Harvey said that as many of the other songs his dad wrote for school productions, it could have been "easy enough for the West End scene".
Nick Harvey wasn't sure his dad would remember this one. It's clear in the video, Paul Harvey wasn't sure about that either.
In the video, he hesitates when he starts, playing with the confident and fluid composition he wrote decades earlier. His son wrote it on Twitter. Within a day, it had been seen more than 2 million times. Thousands of people reacted with reverence and admiration. Celebrities including James Corden and British singer Emeli Sandé retweeted it.
Nick Harvey included this note with video:
"Dad has dementia. Sometimes he drives in In another world and I feel that I am losing him, but he is never more present than when he plays the piano, he came to me today and I asked him to play one of his compositions, and he thought he could not remember it . "
