Just a few days after the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event, the latest Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G tablet in the new Mystic Bronze color variant arrived at the editorial office, which is shared by all upcoming innovations. What are our first impressions of the use and how much does the Galaxy Note20 Ultra differ from last year’s Galaxy Note10 +?
Frosted glass on the back
Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G has grown a few millimeters between generations, otherwise it is the “good”
The phone arrived at the editorial office in the color variant Mystic Bronze
The S Pen axis has thus unexpectedly been moved to the left part of the lower edge, which is only equal to the rounded edges that correspond to the curvature of the screen and the rear glass cover. The profile of the phone remains the same, so the front is filled with a twice curved screen covered with Gorilla Glass Victus glass, and the same applies to the back. But for the first time ever, Samsung’s back is dull, which only adds to the premium. The dull, glossy back of the Galaxy S20 Ultra may not even be straight to the waist. The cover and the photo module are the same glass.
Editorial introduction of Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G:
You can hardly see fingerprints on the back carpet, the shiny glass is preserved only with the slightly embedded Samsung logo. And if the Galaxy S20 Ultra photo module came to you in a giant, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra is literally gigantic! It protrudes perhaps twice as much from the phone’s body as the S20 Ultra and hides three lenses surrounded by large ground circles. It is not visible from a distance that the 12MPx telephoto lens with 5 × optical zoom (and 50 × hybrid) is actually rectangular. The main signal 108MPx is complemented by a new ultra-wide wide-angle lens 12MPx, this time the laser’s autofocus takes fast focus and there is also a light emitting diode.
The photo module with three lenses protrudes quite markedly over the surrounding surface. It can not be compared at all with the raised module in Galaxy S20 Ultra …
So autofocus will not be a problem, the sensor focuses quickly and accurately, but again you have to reckon with the fact that the lens points at a distance, so the details will not be completely sharp. Samsung still uses the Close Shot mode, offered by Scene Optimizer. So you use a zoom lens to capture details, just move a little further away from the lens. Samsung has already introduced the same procedure for the S20 Ultra, but with the Note, everything is a little more precise and intuitive.
Detail of the top and bottom edge
The highest resolution for the recorded videos is 8K, or you can shoot 4K at 60 fps, or in Full HD up to 120 fps. However, this mode is only available in Pro Video photo mode. The photo application is similar to the S20 Ultra, when you switch to a telephoto lens, 5 × optical zoom is activated automatically, which you can switch to 2 ×, 4 ×, 10 × 20 × and 50 × hybrid. In the last two levels you can already see a relatively large amount of digital noise.
Giant display, 120Hz for QHD + do not wait
A body with dimensions of 165 × 77 × 8.1, weight 208 grams and increased IP68 resistance was introduced in a double-curved Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O type with a diagonal of 6.9 inches and a resolution of 3,088 × 1,440 pixels. The display panel is also top this time, the maximum brightness has increased by a quarter between the generations, it supports two display modes, a blue light filter and it is perfectly readable in the sun. You can adjust the brightness automatically in the top bar; at night, especially when the dark mode is active, you will be glad that the phone does not dazzle the surroundings too much.
6.9 “Dynamic AMOLED 2X has rounded corners and has an ultrasonic fingerprint reader
However, one of the previously mentioned speculations has not been confirmed. Although the phone supports a refresh rate of 120Hz, this time the Full HD + resolution is limited. And if you keep the lower resolution, 120Hz is adjustable, so in situations where the 120 Hz advantage would not make sense, the refresh rate changes dynamically to 60 Hz. The display includes an evening ultrasound fingerprint reader that unlocks the first application. The display is bent twice at the edges and works with the S Pen. It’s wireless again, charging directly in the shoulder (moves to the left on the bottom edge) and recently learned wireless gestures to control the system.
You can also control the screen with the S-pen, which slides into the body of the phone, where it is also charged at the same time. You can charge for example Galaxy Buds + headphones from behind
Computer power once again is provided by the 7nm Exynos 990 (ie the same chipset as in the Galaxy S20 series), which is supplemented with 12 GB of RAM. In terms of numbers, this means 490,000 points in the Antutu benchmark, which is not a record, but the computing power is more than sufficient. You can have three applications in the background, which are constantly running in the background at the expense of higher power consumption. The phone is equipped with fast UFS 3.1 memories, the version tested by us has a storage capacity of 256 GB. You can charge the 4500 mAh battery with a 25 Watt cable, or 15 Watt wireless. Charging other devices was also considered.
The phone’s connection is rich, there is no 5G support, which you can selectively disable or the UWB communication standard. Inside the smartphone is a nimble Android 10 with a graphical superstructure One UI 2.5. It includes, for example, the integration of the Close Sharing feature or, for example, a new version of the DeX wireless mode.
