ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – It's Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and it may be time for you to check with your doctor to get a colonoscopy.
Carilion Nurse Tammie Tran has made it their mission to spread awareness of the importance of colonoscopy. Tran says colon cancer hits close to home. The disease took the brother's life in just 35 years.
"He's like," Momma, Momma? "Calling my mother, and my mother is like," Chuck, I'm here! "And he said," It's just over, "and we've just busted to cry, it's so emotional, and my mom said," You know what Chuck, you are a winner, "says Tammie Tran, a colonoscopic lawyer. You know that colon cancer is in your immediate family, I am getting too early screening colonoscopy, knowing your family history, feeling your symptoms and discussing it with your family doctor, and they will know when you need one, Tran says.
And Trans colonoscopy saved his life. Doctors found abnormalities in her thickness and could quickly remove them.
"It is in fact the only screening test that can not only detect abnormalities but also take care of them simultaneously," said Lindsey Bierle, an internal medicine resident at Carilion.
Dr. Lindsey Bierle lost her father to colon cancer two years ago.
"For me, it is a strong advocate of awareness of colon cancer and how easy it is to get screening and prevent cancer, it's just a no-brainer," Bierle said
. She says that screenings are particularly important because people may not have any symptoms at all.
Patients without a medical history are recommended to start screening at the age of 50. Those with genealogy may want screening much earlier.
Bowel preparation for colonoscopy has also improved in recent years. There are various options, and Bierle says that some are much more tasty now than before.
