A1 starts the Pre-5G at Vienna International Airport

Shortly after A1, T-Mobile and "3" set up a 5G test network at Rathausplatz in cooperation with the city of Vienna, the domestic mobile market leader is now following suit again. A1 and its technical partner Nokia launched a Pre5G campus network at Vienna International Airport on Tuesday. According to the participants, the airport is thus the first company in Austria to rely on the next step in the development of mobile communications.

Pre5G is "only" a precursor to 4G / LTE sequel, but the network already uses some features in next generation 5G mobile phones. Specifically, technologies like Network Slicing (see below) and Small Cells are designed to provide high security and high performance mobile coverage of the airport.

Two separate networks

Al Pre5G campus solution at Vienna International Airport plays a key role in Network Slicing . In this way, the mobile network at the airport differs physically and logically between traveling broadband Internet and IT requirements at the airport itself. In this manner, the network ensures the safety of critical processes, regardless of the intensity of the passengers' mobile use. Baggage scanners, handling equipment or tablets can be integrated into the airport's campus network. This is to ensure that responsible persons can always communicate even in an emergency.

Sensitive Traffic Platform

The introduction of a virtualized edge computer platform will also leave all sensitive traffic at the airport. These additional computational resources near users can significantly reduce latency and transport volume for the applications to be transported.
