Argentina begins its quest for another run at a big final, while Iceland gets its first world cup started when the two sides meet in Moscow to open game in Group D.
There could not be a major difference in international experience between the two sides. Argentina is one of the more stored nations in international football history, and with Lionel Messi it is probably best to ever play the game. On the other hand, Iceland has blown on the stage at Euro 2016 with quarterfinals and followed it by winning its qualifying group to become the smallest nation of the population to ever qualify for a World Cup.
Islands fans, of course, were quite happy for their nation's first world cup and gathered outside of Moscow to perform their famous Viking Clap as part of the pregame festivities.
Iceland came out in opening seconds and tried to stunna from the first kick, with Gylfi Sigurdsson trying to speculate a left footed chance from a long range, but it fell out of the way by Willy Caballero's goal.
Argentina's first chance came in the eighth minute of a Messi free kick. His low liner was blinked nicely by Nicolas Tagliafico, but his handsome head was just next to the far post.
Iceland had a golden chance itself a minute later. Argentina tried to play it from the back, and a deflection fell perfectly for Birkir Bjarnason. Aston Villa midfielder scored his chance next to the goal, but released Argentina and destroyed the opportunity.
Messi put his first chance at the 1
Argentina got its breakthrough two minutes later. Marcos Rojo's speculative chance from a long range ended up defending and falling right to Sergio Aguero, who took a mess, angry and shot from inside to give Argentina a 1-0 lead.
Messi forced Halldorsson to another hard save moment later, with Argentina finding his foot in the game after some early nervous moments.
Just when it looked like Argentina would force its will even more, smoothed Iceland. A sluggish sequence in the back of Cabellero made it possible for Alfred Finnbogason to take home from a close-up shot, making it 1 – 1 after 23 minutes.
Argentina left and screamed for a penalty 42 minutes into the match when Eduardo Salvio's cross slipped the ball to Ragnar Sigurdsson of the box as he slipped the ball. VAR was consulted and did not give a penalty.
When half-time was close, Iceland almost took a great lead. Gylfi Sigurdsson waved himself through Argentina defender and forced Cabellero into a dive which he parried before him. However, Argentina could clear, but ended the danger.
