Android 11: Pixel Launcher gets app suggestions for docking

Android 11’s first beta was supposed to land this week, but it ended up being delayed until further notice. Now, an early building has leaked, and some of the new features are being detailed, including a new Pixel Launcher option that puts app suggestions in your dock.

A leaked build of the first Android 11 Beta version is is taken apart on Twitter, and one of the new features included is something we actually saw a while back. In Android 11’s very first developer preview, we found evidence that Google was working on a “Smart Hotseat” for Pixel Launcher. Now it seems that functionality is about to go live.

1 Beta 1 adds “app suggestions” for the docking to Pixel Launcher. Google has previously offered these suggestions on the top line of the app drawer, but now that functionality seems to extend directly to the main screen.

Mishaal Rahman says so this function “supplements” the quay by filling in any missing gaps with a proposal directly from Google. In my own case, it might mean removing the camera icon to leave a gap that in turn would be filled with what Google thinks I might want to use. Given how good Google usually is at guessing which apps I want to use, this sounds really good! It looks like there’s even an option to block apps you don’t want to appear.

We are not sure yet when Google plans to launch Android 11 Beta 1, but we will continue with these app suggestions on Pixel Launcher at that time, as well as whatever we find. Keep up to date!
