2019 has been a year to remember in the film area. From critically acclaimed indie films like Honey Boy to box office juggernauts like The Lion King and Toy Story 4, there really is something for everyone. In all these new releases this year, you more than likely forgot several of them in the mix.
'Alita: Battle Angel'
Alita: Battle Angel was shaky from the beginning because it was pushed back several times. The movie seemed to polarize critics, many really liked it or didn't. Despite all this, it is director Robert Rodriguez's highest-grossing film. But because it was released in early February, many have probably forgotten that the movie was released this year.
Although the Brie Larson-led Marvel Cinematic Universe movie was a hit commercially and critically, it is hard to believe that it was released in 2019 because of the Marvel films to succeed. Both Spider-Man: Far From Home, and of course Avengers: Endgame were released after Captain Marvel. It looks like Disney and Marvel won't be dropping anytime soon. 2020 (which will be released Black Widow and The Eternals ) may be the only year in a while where we do not see 3-4 Marvel films released.
The 2019 American movie, based on the 2011 Mexican movie of the same name, was released in February. It played Gina Rodriguez in the title role with Ismael Cruz Córdova and Anthony Mackie. But the movie came and went without many noticing. This was more than likely due to the negative reviews it received from the critics and the fact that it made no move at the box office, earning only $ 15 million domestically against its $ 15 million budget.
'Men in Black: International'
Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson-led But in Black had all the right ingredients on paper. How can you put together Thor-Ragnarok co-star to add Emma Thompson and Rebecca Ferguson for a good measure and not get a hit? Although it reached $ 253 million worldwide, the almost non-existent reaction of fans and critics makes this movie unforgettable.
Disney has been on a wild track when it comes to redoing classic films. Just look at the success of Lion King. A remake that failed was Dumbo. The film barely moved on the box and received mixed reviews from critics as well, despite a role that included Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton and the great film debut of Nico Parker, the daughter of Thandie Newton.
